Live Lessons: Learn the Unwritten Rules

Mar 29, 2023

Welcome to Pass the Mic and the Live Lessons series. Life happens in the moment—and so do opportunities to pass the mic. We’re having live conversations with powerful female leaders, giving them the opportunity to share their wisdom and mentor the masses.

There are things they don’t teach in school. And when you make it to the workforce, you just have to learn them on the job. That is unless you can learn them from some powerful women who are paving the way for the next generation.

This month, Wavemaker joined forces with us for a Pass the Mic panel live at its New York headquarters. In this third installment of the miniseries, we asked the wonderful women on the panel to share an unwritten rule they’ve learned along the way. Make sure your sound is on because class is in session.

Do one extra thing.

Highlight: “It doesn't cost a lot just to do one extra thing for someone. Someone, clients, anything, if you put that one effort, people notice that. And you care about your work; you want to come off. You know, it just makes it easier to build that relationship. And it's simple things.” – Caroline Tran, Group Director, DoorDash Wavemaker US & Global Markets

Remember to be kind.

Highlight: “This is all a job. We're all humans. We talked about we don't know what people have going on at home. You don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Everybody has a bad day, even with the best intentions. But I think to remember to just be to be kind and open minded is setting you up for success.” – Jenna Fidellow, Head of Content Wavemaker US

Walk in someone else’s shoes.

Highlight: “Walk in someone else's shoes. I think about that consistently. Why are you asking for this? What is it that you really need to have done? What would it really mean if I were on the other side of this telephone call, of this meeting, of this training?” – Davida Arnold, Group Director, Marketing & Communications Wavemaker US

Understand where people are coming from.

Unwritten Rule, Madison Bedard – Pass the Mic
Play

Highlight: “It's around empathy and feeling for others, understanding where they're coming from, understanding their story and why they might behave one way or the other. And then using that empathy to help encourage them to be empathetic to others.” – Madison Bedard, Director, DEI and Marketing Operations Wavemaker US

Someone believes in you.

Unwritten Rule, Briana Finelli – Pass the Mic
Play

Highlight: ”You deserve to be here no matter what. Somebody believed in you. Someone in this interview process, someone who invited you to this meeting, somebody believed in you. And you just hold on to that. You sit in this room. You be present. You deserve to be in this room. And you find more people who feel like you deserve to be in that room, and they will hype you up. They will be your accomplice.” – Briana Finelli, Head of Commerce Wavemaker US
